東野さんのすごい才能で、読者を強く引っ張っていく、かなりの長編だ。そして、ホテル業界の奥へ、ずんずん入っていく。そこで、起きる数々の人間ドラマ。事件だけでなく、ホテルの日常をドラマチックに書いている。面白いし、やめられなくなるのだが、結末というか、事件の動機が、私にはちょっと弱い気がした。４５０ページの本を読み進むと、それなりに愛着が湧き、最後への期待感が膨らむもので、長旅を共にした本の最後が、「こんな動機で、大それた事件を起こすだろうか・・・」という感じ。でも、東野さんの文章力のすごさに、私は今回も魅了され続けた。

この噂の女は神出鬼没。いろいろな人の暮らしの、あちこちに出てくる。そして、とても強欲で、図々しい。又、頭も相当良い。色仕掛けで、次々に男を手玉に取る。ようするに、ハチャメチャなのだ。その噂の女に、私は筆者の強い愛情を感じてしまう。何か不思議な小説だ。

日本人の心の襞を書かせたら、この人に勝る人はいないのでは・・・東芝日曜劇場のために書かれたコレクションから、この本には３作入っている。昭和５０年代前半に書かれたものだ。でも、全然古くない。そして、ユーモアたっぷり。昭和の家の感じ、家族の在り方、服装、食事まで、目の前に飛び出してきそうだ。本当に惜しい人を、早くに亡くしてしまったものだ。今もし生きていらっしゃったら、８０代。どんな本を書いているだろうか。

まさにタイトル通りの、お話。不倫も出てくるし、若さの悩みも出てくるし、尽きるところ、人間のまあ本質で、「裏表」があるって事かなあ。そして、心の中は秘密で、恋人とも付き合い、親子とも生活を共にする。「文学的・哲学的尾行」が、本の大テーマ。これって、ちょっとカッコ良いよねえ・・・だけど、のぞき見趣味とどう違うのかなあ。言葉の綾？？お話自体はとても素敵なのだけど、二重生活という本のタイトルと、文学的・哲学的尾行との間に、深い溝がある気がしてしょうがない。

新聞連載を、加筆して刊行された、超大作。いろいろな時事問題が織り込まれ、思わず惹きこまれてしまう。もちろん、宮部さんの類まれな才能、洞察力、深い勉強に支えられている事は、言うまでもない。裁判所の競売に絡まる問題がメインになっているのだが、現在に生きる一筋縄ではいかない家族性、男女関係など、ミステリーを基本にしながら、深く切り込んでいる。私自身も、昨年3回目の家を購入したので、この辺のことは多少勉強し（もちろん日米の違いはあるが）、問題点など大いに共感した。子供の切なる声から、高齢の方々の老後の過ごし方まで、言ってみれば、すべての人に関わる問題が、一冊にまとまっていると言っても、過言ではないと思う。必読の長編一冊である。
