とても美しい小説です。だけど、何だかこういうコンセプトのテレビドラマ最近見たなあ、と思ったら、「流星ワゴン」だった。１９９４年に発表された本作品がきっと先にあったのだろうけれど。過去と現実を行きつ戻りつ、お話が進む。とてもレトロに、戦時中まで戻るし、私にとってのレトロもある。地下鉄銀座線には、小さい頃祖母に連れられて、浅草まで渋谷から買い物に行ったので、あの駅近くになって、電気が消えて暗くなる一瞬を良く覚えている。ちょっとよそいきの格好して、祖母の横にちょこんと座っていた私。帰りには、よく東横の上の食堂で、スパゲッテイ・ミートソースをご馳走してくれたっけ。この小説に登場しそうな光景。

軽く読めちゃって楽しい、そして主人公に結構のめり込んで、一生懸命になれる。石田さん、さすが、ヒットメーカーだけの事はあります。これはシューカツだけじゃなく、人生のいろいろな岐路に立つ、すべての人にお薦めの、「がんばれ！貴方にも出来る」小説です。でも、あんまり面白くて、自分のやるべき事をお忘れにならないように。

長いこと椎名誠さんの本を読ませてもらっているけれど、この本は集大成的な意味があると思う。椎名さんのファンなら分かると思うけれど、椎名さんお得意の表現にちりばめられ、彼の仲間達が元気に登場し、大騒動を起こしつつ、友情完結的な（特に巻末の登場人物のご意見など）感じで終わる。椎名さん、一切ぶれるところなく生き続け（もう７０歳くらいなのでは？？）、なお現在もぶっちぎりのエネルギーで、遊牧民たちを引っ張っていく貴方は、素晴らしすぎる。こういう先輩がいると、元気が出て、毎日こなしている仕事が少なすぎるぜ（これでも、結構沢山の事同時にやっているのだけど）、と感じてしまう。明日から５月、今年も後７か月、努力邁進していく所存です。
