The Movie “The Master” 10/31/12
October 31, 2012
The movie “The Master” tells the story of Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a World War II veteran struggling to adjust to a post-war life, and meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Symour Hoffman), a leader of a philosophical movement known as “The Cause” (Scientology). Dodd sees something special in Freddie, and accepts him into Dodd’s movement. They started to share their lives together, and travel together to spread “The Cause” messages to people. It is an intriguing story about master minding. It can be fake, and it can be meaningful to some people. It can be harmful, and it can be cure. In this movie, Dodd (the founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard) shares the similar problem that Quell has. According to the biography of L. Ron Hubbard, he himself is a WWII veteran, and after releasing from the hospital, he founded the new movement. The main character of this movie, Quell, over wraps with Hubbard, and Hubbard and Dodd are over wrapping strongly. It is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and the music was written by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. The music is amazing! And the camera work is excellent as well. Because of this movie, I read about Scientology and learned some. I understand Tom Cruise saw the movie with the director. Amy Adams is Dodd’s wife. It is a controversial movie. It is interesting, but I am not sure it is good or bad.
