秋の森の奇跡 林 真理子 12/20/10
もちろん林さんの小説に登場するんだから、素敵な男女ばかり。でも、話の根源は、どんな中年（敢えてこういう言い方します。）女性にで も、起こり得る、そして希望的に起こって欲しいと思うことでは。主人公の裕子の置かれた立場、心理的切羽詰感など、私だけでなく、誰もがこの年齢なら経験 しているはずですね。でも、もちろんこれはお話だから、素敵な男性が現れ（まあ昔風に言う、白馬に乗った騎士）、その窮状を救ってくれる。この本を読む と、心理的中年症候群に陥っている女性は、新井さんの出現を望み、裕子さんと新井さんのロマンスに自分を重ねるのか。掲載された雑誌がどういう種類のもの か分からない私ですが、きっとこのお話を読んで、一喜一憂した女性がたーーくさんいると思います。現実には、こんなに夢のような事が、起こる訳ないんだけ どね！
下流の宴 林 真理子 12/19/10
たった今、この本を読み終わったけど、何だか余韻がすごくで、その力に酔いそう。林さんの独特の視線と、バブル風俗から続く饗宴の様、 人間の本質と現実、勝者と敗者、この余りの真実に打ちのめされています。これが、新聞連載小説だったなんて、本当にすごい。物語の最初に出てくる登場人物 が、其々典型的な人物描写で、ある意味では、物語の最後が見えているとも言えるのだけど、その進行過程が生半可じゃない。そして、最後のお母さんの言葉 も、本当に恐ろしい。真実に正面から向かうには勇気がいるけれど、それなしには、未来もない、明日もない。自分のことを知ることがどれだけ大事か、そうし てこそ、家族にも、隣人にも、友人にも、真実の対処が出来る。名著です。
Violin Dreams Arnold Steinhardt Houghton Mifflin Company 11/21/10
This is the second book of Mr. Steinhardt. He is an amazing writer! His dreams and stories around the violin are so lively, so personal, so moving—-. Again his book gave me tears. Especially I was touched by his parents history as Jews. How fundamental the music is in Jewish lives, and I started to think about my own heritage as Japanese. My thought still continues–. This book has full of beautiful and thoughtful stories.
シェエラザード 上・下 浅田 次郎 講談社文庫 11/3/10
浅田さんの大長編・歴史ロマン小説を読み終えました。正直に言えば、出だしは何だか調子が出なくて、もたもた読んでいたのですが、話に 一旦惹きこまれてからは、時も忘れて読み耽ってしまいました。実際に存在する阿波丸のお話が基になっているらしいのですが、浅田さんご本人の口から、「調 べていけばいくほど目を背けたくなるような悲惨な事件でーー、あのくらいの歯の浮くようなロマンスがないと、なかなか悲惨さを中和できない」というコメン トがあります。第二次大戦末期に沈没した「弥勒丸」を中心に、過去と現在を行きつ戻りつして、お話が展開していきます。戦争によって引き裂かれた許婚達、 船に乗船していた一人一人のドラマ、軍部の決断に最後まで抵抗する人間、白系ロシア人の悲劇、など、文中にも出てきキーワード「ジグソーパズル」のピース がばらまかれ、そして時間とともに、一つの絵になるような、壮大なお話です。感動しました。
野ばら 林 真理子 文春文庫 10/19/10
全編、林 真理子ワールドです。これも引きずられるように、一気に読んでしまいました。女性の心理を描いたら本当に右に出るものはいない、という感じ。宝 塚と歌舞伎の世界を交差させ、不倫と離婚を交差させ（これは当たり前か！）、若く美しい女性の甘ったるくも、小ずるい毎日ーー。二人の親友のそれぞれの社 会人・人生の初期を描いています。若い事の素晴らしさと、その影に隠れる不安と不遜。ああ、私にもこんな時が、うーーーーんと前にあったんだなあ、と思っ て読みました。
姫椿 浅田 次郎 文春文庫 10/15/10
美しいお話ばかりの、短編集。浅田さんの様々な語り口が、それぞれの短編に生きています。どの登場人物も、もしかしたらご近所でお見かけするような方ばか り。その方達のそれぞれの人生が、短編の中に凝縮され、涙を誘います。浅田さん、自他共に認める、「ラスベガス大好き！」のようですが、こういう繊細な心 の襞を描く小説を読むと、その対比が面白いです。やっぱり、プロフェッショナルっていう事なんですね。素晴らしい短編集です。
RURIKO 林 真理子 角川書店 10/12/10
面白くて、一気に読んでしまった！登場人物が、もう目の前にいるみたい。小林 旭が、石原 裕次郎が、美空 ひばりが、生き生きと、作 者の手の中で動いている。自由にしゃべり、自由に恋愛し、自由に行動している。林 真理子さん、本当にすごいです。貴方の頭の中で考え出された物語の輪 が、大スター達に乗り移って、悲しみ、喜び、笑っている。膨大な量の資料を読み込んで、現地に行ってその場を見、匂いを嗅ぎ、浅丘さんに会って、お話しを 聞きーー。でも、それをまとめて大きな箱に入れて、次にその箱から出て来た時は、林 真理子の小説になっている。感服。そして、昭和の大スター達の世界 に、一時連れて行って下さって、本当にありがとうございます。
エンジェル 石田 衣良 集英社文庫 10/10/10
石田さんのご本はいつも大好きです。残念ながら、今回のこの「エンジェル」には、ちょっとついていけませんでした。これは私個人の完全 な独断ですがこういう「死の世界からやって来てーー」というお話嫌いではないのですが、何だかファンタジーが足りないような気がしました。現実を遥かに超 えたところでのお話なので（といっても、ストーリーを作る事自体が、現実ではない訳だけど）、私の希望としてはいっそ、もっと現実離れして欲しい、ふあふ あ感が欲しい、となってしまうのです。ごめんなさい。これは、私の完全な独断です。これからも、石田さんのご本は読み続けたいと思います。
恋にあっぷあっぷ 田辺 聖子 （光文社） 9/2/10
大ベテランの田辺さんの、お若い時のご本です。長く第一線で多くの読者を惹きつけ、常にフレッシュなアイデアを世に問い、そしてインタビュー、講演などで も、魅力あるお話をなさる、田辺さん。本当に脱帽です。この本も、田辺さん独自の語り口で、可愛くも、真実を突いて、主人公達があたかも自分のお隣さんの ような、気分にさせてしまう。今回の女主人公アキラには、随分と冒険をさせましたね。大好きなお話です。だから、又しつこいけれど、私本中毒なので、一回 詠み始めると、止められないんです。だから、勉強に集中する時は、辛いけれど、禁本（普通の意味じゃないけどね）しなけりゃ、いけないんです。
闇のカルテット 小池 真理子 （双葉社） 9/1/10
再び、小池真理子さんです。この本も、若いときに書かれたもののようです。物語に惹きこまれて、一気に読んでしまいました。サスペンスとしての話の構築も すごいし、人間描写という面でもすごい！男と女の愛を書かせたら、この人に右に出る人はいないのでは、といつも思っていますが（ご主人も美しい話を書かれ ているのですが）、今回のこの本も何とも言えない辛さと美しさの狭間で、ストーリーが動いていきます。読み始めたら、もう貴方も虜になってしまいますよ。 だからピアノの練習や勉強に集中したい時は、本を遠ざける私なんです。
柩の中の猫 小池 真理子 （白水社） 8/2/10
小池 真理子さんの本は、いつも感動するんです。この本は発行日を見ると、１９９０年となっているので、20年近く前に、執筆なさった んですね。美しい話です。まるで、自分の手の中に、白くてふわふわの猫を抱いているような、現実的な感覚に、陥りました。雪のシーンも、とっても身近に感 じられたーー。作者の描写力のすごさなんですね。何だか、本当に自分も川久保 悟郎の家に下宿しているような、気分になりました。そして、ほの暗い廊下を 夜歩いたり、一人妄想にふけったり。お薦めです。
無傷の愛 岩井 志麻子 （双葉社）7/30/10
久しぶりの日本語の本！！何だかとても嬉しいです。それにしても、作家という人の頭の中はどうなっているんでしょうねーー。１０の短編 からなるこの本ですが、どの話も日常では絶対に有り得ない物語ばかり。どういう状況に自分を置くと、こういうストーリーが浮かんで来るのか。それとも、次 から次へと、湧き水のように、涌いて来るのか。其々が、奇怪でかつファンタジーのあるお話。特に、「マイナスのアイドル」という発想、良くあるようでい て、こういう定義で聞くのは初めてで、その独創性に、もう平身低頭です。すごい短編集ですよ！
The Cello Suites: J. S. Bach, Pablo Casals, and the Search for a Baroque Masterpiece Eric Siblin (Atlantic Monthly Press) 7/24/10
I have two entirely different feelings toward this book. I enjoyed knowing about the lives of J. S. Bach and Casals because some facts were new to me. On the other hand some of basic musical knowledge was not needed for me, but for many of readers I am sure they enjoyed them as well. I think it is a very clever idea to write 3 things in parallel motion, using formats of Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites, but some point of this book I started to feel unconnected between those 3 matters. If you don’t know anything about J. S. Bach’s cello suites this is the great book to be introduced.
Chopin’s Funeral Benita Eisler (Alfred A. Knopf) 7/15/10
I have read several Chopin’s biographical books, and this one is very poetic. But somehow I got little bit bored in the middle of the book—. I suppose I prefer more direct expression, like Steinhardt’s.

The New Toughness Training For Sports James E. Loehr (A Plume Penguin Book) 4/25/10
I have had this book for a while, and it was the second time to read it. This is a sports psychology book which can be related to music performance. That was the reason I wanted to read it again! It is an excellent book describing the mental stages going through the tough situations, like STAGE Fright!! Aha—. It is a “Forever Topic” for the musicians, and I wanted to learn for me and my students. The author uses Physical, Mental, and Emotional parts of the humans, and analyzes them, and leads to how to get tough on those. It is a Big Recommendation Book!
Mozart in the Jungle: sex, drugs, and classical music Blair Tindall (Grove Press) 1/2 5/10
Well– it is very hard to describe this book. Is it a scandal book, a memoir of Samuel Sanders, a system of classical music business, or author’s life long complaint?? First of all I did not have good feeling after I finished reading it. I never met her or never heard her playing so I only can judge this book from reading. I am also a professional musician, and married to an orchestra player who has played with 6 different orchestras. I have lived as musician since when I was 3 years old, and I never gotten any other job besides being a musician, performing and teaching. I know many many many wonderful musicians!! If we focus on sex and drugs in our lives we can write anything, like, Bar Exams in the Jungle:sex, drugs, and law schools, or Beauty on the Ice:sex, drugs and a figure skating. If she likes to focus on those themes that is her choice, but it does not apply to most of musicians. Also her attitude toward finding male friends is obscure. After I reading this book I felt so sorry to her friends (she calls them her friends, but I don’t know they think the same way or not) who are criticized without much of the reason or made fun of, including big name musicians. I don’t think I would recommend this book to you.
Grand Obsession Perri Knize (Scribner) 1/15/10
This is the book which we learn about the world of piano instrument. We follow the journey the author took to seek the best piano for her. It was not easy at all! After reading the first part I realized we, professional pianists, have a different view to our instrument. Of course we love our home piano, but we have to perform on different pianos all the time, and one of the most important tasks for us is to get used to each piano to make the piano the best sound and to get the good relationship with any piano we perform. Each piano (even though they look similar–) has different personality, different voicing, different regulation, different sonority, different action, different everything!! And the regular maintenance is important on any piano. The great piano can be out of tune, bad voicing , etc if we don’t take care of them.
It is an interesting story around piano.
Romance on Three Legs: Glenn Gould’s Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano

It is all about Glenn Gould’s famous personality, good or bad. I believe this is the first book that the name of his lover was revealed, the wife of Lucas Foss, Cornelia. As the author wrote I was one of many people believing Gould was gay.
All of us can relate to Gould on the obsession to our instruments, not necessary in piano, any instrument. I started to play piano when I was 3, and I am still playing after 100 years!! So it is a part of our IMPORTANT lives.Actually piano is the most distant instrument compare to others, like wood winds or brass. And one of the most important task for the pianists is to get used to each instrument prior to the concert. Each one has different personality! I enjoyed reading this book, especially I am always curious about Gould!
I am reading another “Piano Search” book, this time by the amateur pianist. I will give you a report once I finish reading it.
